I think of myself as a bad writer with big ideas, but I’d rather be that than a big writer with bad ideas.

  3. Gli elfi scuri ricordano tantissimo i melniboneani
  4. The witcher è un omaggio molto evidente a Elric
While Vecna’s first iteration was solely through his eye and hand (all that remained of him after being destroyed in battle), he progressed throughout the editions from arch-lich all the way to god of undeath. But why, it must be asked, did his eye and hand remain? Something of his story, no doubt, owes to the game’s literary influences (not to mention his very name, anagram of Jack Vance. The Eye and Hand of Vecna owe much of their inspiration to Michael Moorcock’s first trilogy of short novels on the eternal hero Corum: The Knight of the Swords, The Queen of the Swords, and The King of the Swords. Corum is the last survivor of his race, a vaguely elf/sidhe-like people who were hunted down and butchered by the humans. Corum himself is captured by humans, whose idea of fun is gouging out his left eye and chopping off his left hand. Corum escapes before they can finish him off and survives with the help of a different (and much kinder) group of humans.. ”

During the 70s my work was being so thoroughly ripped off by people who didn’t ask, that I decided I had to let one person do games, one handle comics and so on — the way you pick a lad in Morocco to be your ‘representative’. He then drives away or prosecutes the rest. I didn’t know who to trust, who to go with. I had given Gary Gygax permission to run Elric, but I’d also told others they could do the same. No money was involved. “We were still in the hippy period as far as many of us were concerned, and I thought we were all in this for fun rather than profit. Then games started to become big business and the guy at Chaosium threatened TSR with a lawsuit. My agent then formalised a (very bad) contract with Chaosium (he would have done exactly the same with TSR) who were going to do Eternal Champion games. “Of course, Chaosium turned out to be crooks, paying no royalties, ripping me off, behaving in a dodgy way. I tried over the years to get the stuff away from them but it wasn’t until Mongoose made a serious offer to Chaosium, plus an offer to me, that I was able to switch. Mongoose have proven a completely trustworthy firm, offering me all scenarios and so on for inspection before publishing. In the main, too, they have used better artwork. “Gary told me that he wished he’d known the circumstances, since he had other ideas for EC games. I too wished I’d signed with GG, who seemed a pleasant and agreeable guy.”

L’ambientazione è molto “over the top”: come nota Tim Callahan se c’è una flotta all’orizzonte, non è una flotta qualsiasi ma 40000 navi fantasma sostenute dalla magia del Chaos.8)When Moorcock has a fleet of ships on the horizon, it’s not just a fleet of ships, its 40,000 undead magic-imbued ships. When Elric finally rescues his beloved, it’s not a mere victim of kidnapping he finds, but rather his wife as a bloated demonic worm monster who throws herself on his sword so as not to live such a tortured existence. When Elric dies—well, he doesn’t really, as the struggle for Eternal Balance never ends
